Client Expectations
The Waymo Self-Driving Car is releasing a new model, the customized Chrysler Pacifica, featuring a 13.3-inch (diagonal), 2560 x 1600 pixel LED-backlit, touchscreen display. The displays will be mounted to the back of each seat and the system is fully integrated with the car. The display controls can control any part of the car as one would on the car dashboard.
The client is relying on me, through research and creativity, to determine the full set of capabilities. I brainstormed most commonly used features that drivers and passengers reach for and compiled the following features to include in my design:
Concept Development
Onboarding
-
Personalize experience - present passenger name, make sure correct passenger gets in the car
-
Display address of the destination(s) in order of the route
-
Option to add or remove destinations
-
Edit destination
-
Confirm or see alternative routes
-
Safety - car does not move until everyone is buckled in
In-Ride Experience
-
Entertainment: music, tv, games, etc.
-
Car controls: heat, fan, volume
-
Customization - connect to Bluetooth to play personal music
-
Emergency feature - available at all times if help is needed
-
Google Assistant - accessibility service
-
Help Assistance
-
Dark mode vs. light mode depending on time of day
Design Process
I want users to feel safe and protected in this new high-tech car by making my designs as "smart" as possible with animations of the car "thinking". I also want users to enjoy the ride by making the interface easily navigable and the entertainment accessible.
Note: The description of each screen can be accessed by clicking the image.
